Design of section for Shear

Step I : Calculate design factored shear force (Vu)

Step II : Compute Nominal Shear Stress

Here,

The value of Tmax is given in the table above.

Step III :

Step IV:

a)

  1. It imparts ductility.
  2. Prevents horizontal cracks in member due to shrinkage.
  3. Provide confinement to the concrete.
  4. Enhance the performance of member subjected to tension.
  5. Enhance the dowel action of longitudinal bar.
  6. Prevents lateral buckling of longitudinal bar.
  7. Controls the proportion of diagonal cracks.

b)

Step V: Shear reinforcement is provided by following three ways:

  1. Vertical Stirrups
  2. Bent-up Bars with vertical stirrups
  3. Inclined Stirrups

Vertical Stirrups:

They are suited for load reversal condition.

Inclined Stirrups

Bent Up Bar

Bent up bars are the main tensile reinforcement bent an angle at appropriate location. These bars do not enhance dowel action of the main longitudinal bars, hence are always provided in combination with vertical stirrups.

  • If all bars are bend at same location then,
  • If bent up bars are bent at different locations

Note : fy is not assumed to be more than 415 N/mm2 irrespective of grade of steel. In order to impose the control over the crack width.

Step VI: Maximum Spacing for Shear reinforcement.
