Difference Between Some Terms and Definitions

Deformation Vs Displacement

  • Change in shape is deformation.
  • Change in Position is displacement

If straight member changed into curve member then it is deformation.

Incase of an elastic body translate from position A to B then it is called Displacement. (This is called rigid body movement, even body is elastic, because no deformation)

Translation Vs Rotation

  • Straight line movement in any direction is translation.
  • Circular movement about any point is called rotation.

Rotation Vs Bending

  • Circular movement about any point is called rotation.
  • It is type of deformation.

Rotation is due to bending.

Force Vs Axial Force

  • Force :- It is vector (having both magnitude and direction)
  • Axial Force : It is scaler (having Magnitude)

It is noted that tension and compression are not any directions, they are only effects.

Axial force is the combination of two equal and opposites forces.

Positive and Negative doesn’t mean direction. It is just anything recognized by negative and positive (e.g. Covid)

Elongation Vs Expansion

  • In elongation, the molecule get expands. It is due to external force applied to elongate.
  • In Expansion, the distance between the molecules Increase. It is due to increase in temperature.

Slope

  • It is angle measured from X-axis or horizontal plane.

Equilibrium and Static Equilibrium

If net force and movement acting on a body is zero in all directions then body is in equilibrium. For example : bodies in space, vehicle moving with constant speed.

Static Equilibrium

If net force moment acting on a body is zero and body is in rest/static state then it is called static Equilibrium.

For example: Buildings, Bridges etc.

Free body Diagram

It is the graphical representation of the body with all forces (internal or external) acting upon it.

Method of Free Body Diagram (FBD)

  • Make body free from (isolate) all the loads and reactions.
  • Apply all loads and support reactions.
  • Apply all internal forces at cut section to satisfy condition of equilibrium.

Compatibility

The compatibility or good fit of material or member or components while being deformed under loading is compatibility of structure.
